What is duotone printing?

(CPA000021)

Duotones are the result of printing a grayscale image in two different ink colors. Printing photographs by the duotone method produces a richer, longer tone scale than is possible using only one color.

Photoshop offers a number of duotone curves to use as a starting point for the development of a pleasing image. To use these curves, click the LOAD button and look in the "Goodies" folder in the "Photoshop" folder for the duotone presets. (They will be down two or more folders, depending on your version of Photoshop.)

Duotones can provide a very pleasing effect. While they may be built to have more or less color in different parts of the scale, they are still monochromatic in nature, as both inks are printed with the same grayscale image.
