dpi (dots per inch)
A unit of resolution for a printer, monitor, or scanner. It literally indicates the number of dots that the device can place in a inch. Higher values give better, smoother output.
For example, a computer monitor is typically 72 dpi, most common laser printers can achieve 300 dpi or 600 dpi.
When preparing artwork for printing, you should ensure that:
- any non-vector line-art is prepared at 1200 dpi, and
- photographs and other smoothly-changing images are prepared at 300 dpi.
If they are stored at lower resolutions they may appear rough, jagged, and unreadable.
